A transient is a brief, rapid change in level and waveform at the beginning of a sound. It is especially noticeable in the strike of a kick or snare and the moment a pick hits a string. Transients strongly affect how clearly a sound is defined and how precisely its timing is perceived.
How transients shape a sound
At the same overall level, a sound with a sharp transient tends to feel clear, close, and immediate, while a softer transient can feel smoother and farther away. In a waveform, transients often appear as the leading edge of a large peak. DAWs also use them as reference points when analyzing beats and timing.
Using transients in editing
Transient detection can automatically place edit points or warp markers for drum timing correction, audio slicing, and sample extraction. Detection is not always musically correct, so remove markers that do not represent real attacks and add markers manually where the performance requires them.
Adjusting transients in sound design
A transient shaper can emphasize the onset to bring a hit forward or reduce it for a softer result. A compressor can also change the attack: a slower attack often lets more of the transient pass, while a faster attack can control peaks more strongly.
Points to watch
Too much emphasis can make a sound harsh and raise its peak level without adding useful loudness. Too much reduction can remove clarity and rhythmic drive. Compare the processed and unprocessed sound at matched levels, both in solo and in the full mix.
