A shelving EQ boosts or cuts a broad range above or below a set frequency all at once, like a shelf. There is a low shelf for the low end and a high shelf for the high end. It suits gentle adjustments to weight, brightness, and air, and its purpose is separate from that of a notch or peak EQ, which fixes a specific narrow problem.
Low shelf and high shelf
A low shelf acts broadly on content below the corner frequency, and a high shelf on content above it. Typical uses are tidying the low end slightly or dialing brightness up and down. Unlike a filter that keeps removing everything past the cutoff, a shelf levels off toward the gain you set.
When to use it
Use it when you want to adjust air on a vocal, the weight of a bass, or overall brightness in broad strokes. Even small moves have a large effect on the whole mix, so compare within the song rather than in solo. It is not suited to targeting a single problem spot.
Check before you boost
Raising a high shelf can bring up noise and harsh content along with brightness. Raising a low shelf adds low-end weight but also muddiness and headroom consumption. Decide whether you need to add a band or to reduce an unwanted one first.
How it differs from other EQs
A peak EQ adjusts around a center frequency, and high-pass and low-pass filters reduce one side. A shelving EQ changes a broad region at one end all together. Choosing the shape that fits your goal makes it easier to avoid over-processing.
How to check
