EQ (equalizer) is an effect that selects frequency bands within a sound, such as low, mid, and high, and increases or decreases the amount of each. Rather than moving the overall volume, it corrects tonal imbalances such as muddiness, harsh resonances, and a cluttered low end.
What EQ can do
Typical uses include removing unwanted low end with a filter, bringing out clarity in a voice, and sorting out bands where instruments overlap. It is not just a tool for making a single sound flashier; it creates space for several sounds playing at once.
Frequency, gain, and Q
Frequency is the range you adjust, gain is how much you raise or lower that band, and Q describes how wide the affected range is. A narrow Q makes it easier to target a specific resonance, while a wide Q changes the overall tone gently.
Cut and boost
Reducing something that bothers you is a cut; adding a characteristic you want is a boost. Cutting the unwanted content modestly first, and boosting only if that is not enough, makes it easier to tell a genuine tonal change from a simple level increase.
Insert position and order
EQ is normally inserted in the channel strip. Before a compressor it shapes what gets compressed; after it, it shapes the tone of the compressed sound. There is no single correct order, so try what suits your goal and match levels with the bypassed sound when comparing.
Things to watch in a mix
A sound that feels good soloed is not necessarily best in context. Do not try to fix with EQ what faders, panning, or the arrangement could solve; play the whole song and build up small changes instead.
A first exercise
Boost the band you want to work on heavily, sweep the frequency to find the resonance that bothers you, then return the gain and cut only as much as you need. Use extreme settings only for searching, and finish by comparing against bypass to confirm that you really improved things.
