Basic Export Settings for Video Game Music and Sound Effects

Audio for a game is not finished simply because it sounds complete when played on its own in a DAW. It will be imported into a game engine and triggered repeatedly by actions and screen transitions, so the format, duration, loops, loudness, and file names all need to be prepared with implementation in mind.

Start by confirming the required format and sample rate, mono or stereo configuration, looping method, and loudness standard with the developer.

Background Music and Sound Effects Serve Different Roles

Background music plays for extended periods and may loop or switch as the scene changes. Sound effects respond briefly to button presses, attacks, notifications, and other events, and several may play simultaneously. Even when both use the same export settings, they require different checks.

A short one-shot, such as an impact or notification sound, makes any playback delay obvious, so do not leave excessive silence at the beginning.

Export WAV Files to the Delivery Specifications

Prepare the source files as WAV and match the project’s required sample rate and bit depth. Do not assume one standard configuration. Confirm whether the game engine will perform the conversion or whether you need to provide the compressed format yourself.

Mono may be sufficient for short sound effects. Using stereo only for sounds that need directional or spatial information can reduce file size and the processing load during simultaneous playback.

Trim the Beginning and Preserve the Tail of Each Sound Effect

Prioritize responsiveness by trimming silence from the beginning, but do not cut off the attack itself. For explosions, magic effects, and other sounds with long tails, preserve enough of the decay to remain natural if the game transitions to the next sound.

Listen to Background Music Loop Repeatedly

The delivery method for looping background music depends on whether the introduction plays only once before the main section repeats or the entire track repeats. You may provide the loop points as sample positions or times, or deliver the introduction and looping body as separate files.

Check the transition with the seamless loop maker, then play the completed file continuously for several minutes. Problems such as reverb tails, beat drift, and low-frequency phase changes are easy to miss after only one cycle.

Set Levels with Simultaneous Playback in Mind

If an individual sound effect is mastered too loudly, overlapping attacks or notifications may cause clipping. Listen to the background music, voices, UI sounds, and ambience together and determine which elements should take priority.

LUFS can serve as a comparison guide, but short sound effects are difficult to judge from that value alone, so use both their peaks and actual perceived loudness.

Create a Naming Convention That Communicates Each File’s Purpose

Instead of names such as “SE_01,” use a consistent order for category, scene, intensity, and sequence number, as in “ui_confirm_01,” “enemy_hit_light_03,” and “bgm_battle_loop.” Do not keep appending “final” to revised files. Record version numbers or update dates in a tracking sheet.

Perform the Final Check Inside the Game

DAWs, browsers, and game engines use different playback and level-handling processes. On the target device, test rapid triggering, overlapping playback, scene transitions, pausing, and both headphones and speakers. Check for cut-off sounds and abrupt level differences.
