Vibrato is a technique that makes the pitch of a note waver slightly and periodically, adding expression and warmth to sustained notes. It is used in singing and on strings, guitar, wind instruments, and synths.
The basic idea
The speed and the depth of the waver change the impression. Too much makes the pitch sound unstable, so choosing an amount that suits the song and the tone is important.
Using it in performance and programming
Adding a little toward the end of a long vocal or string note sounds natural. In a DAW, move the pitch slightly with an LFO or automation and check the waver in pitch.
Difference from related terms
Vibrato mainly modulates pitch. That is different from tremolo, which modulates volume.
Start with a small, slow waver and you can add expression without damaging the note.
