Step input is a method of entering MIDI notes one at a time while the song is not running in real time. The position advances according to a chosen note value, making it possible to create accurate melodies, chords, and drum patterns without playing them at full speed.
How step input works
Choose a duration such as a quarter note, eighth note, or sixteenth note, then enter a note or chord from a MIDI keyboard or on-screen keyboard. The input position moves forward by that value. Depending on the DAW, you may also be able to enter rests, dotted notes, ties, and triplets.
When it is useful
Step input works well for complex chords, even bass lines, detailed drum parts, and phrases that are difficult to perform in real time. Because each pitch can be checked before it is entered, the method is also useful when transcribing or arranging from a score.
What to adjust afterward
Correct pitch and duration alone can still sound mechanical if every note has the same intensity. Adjust velocity, gate time, and note position, then add dynamics and spaces where the part needs them.
How it differs from real-time input
Real-time input naturally records a player’s timing and dynamics, while step input makes exact placement easier. You can combine both methods, for example by creating a precise foundation with step input and then adding human expression by hand.
Checking the setup
Make sure the input value matches the grid. Confusing triplet divisions with regular eighth or sixteenth notes will produce a different rhythm. Loop a short section while checking and refining the result.
