Mono is a format that handles sound on one channel. It does not use left-right differences and plays back as a single signal. Vocals, bass, kick, snare and instruments recorded with a single microphone are often handled as mono tracks during production.
What one channel changes
A mono signal consists of a single channel. Played on left and right speakers, the same signal comes from both, so it images in the center. You cannot create stereo width, but it is easier to judge the outline of the sound, its level, and the effect of EQ and compression.
When mono material suits
The kick and bass that carry the low end, and the vocal at the center of the song, are often kept stable in mono. Anything recorded with one microphone is basically mono. Forcing width onto material that does not need stereo can add phase problems and unstable left-right balance.
Summing stereo to mono
When a stereo signal is summed to mono, left and right are added together. Depending on the phase relationship between them, some sounds get louder and others quieter. Always compare by ear before converting important stereo material. Using only one channel and summing both also give different results.
Why check in mono
Listening to a finished mix in mono is not about removing width; it is about confirming that the important elements reach the listener whatever the playback system. If the vocal or the low end weakens in mono even though the stereo sounds good, revisit phase, width, effect amounts and how you used pan.
Notes on exporting
When a client, a video or a podcast requires mono, convert at the end and check the result. It is safer to keep the stereo file you produced from and make copies for each use. To convert a WAV or a similar file to mono, you can use the audio format conversion tool.
