A lead is the part or sound that carries the main melody or a signature phrase at the front of a song. It can be a vocal, a guitar, a synth – whatever you want the listener to hear as the star.

A lead is brought forward not by volume alone but by contrast in register, tone, rhythm, and the density of the sounds around it. Deciding on one star for the song keeps the focus from blurring.
Its role in writing and performing
In songs without vocals, the melody of a lead synth or guitar becomes the face of the track. Even in vocal songs, a short lead in the gaps of the vocal can reinforce the impression.
How to check it in a DAW
Once you have written the star phrase, thin out the accompaniment in the same frequency range and compare. Changing the sound, raising the octave, and raising the level only where it is needed are also effective.
How it differs from related terms
A lead is the role that gets heard up front, and backing is the role that supports it. A riff can also function as a lead.
The basic approach is to decide what the song is meant to make you hear, and treat that element as the lead.
