Fingering

Japanese name
フィンガリング

Fingering means which fingers you use to produce notes on a keyboard, on strings, or on a wind instrument. It affects how easy a part is to play, how fast you can play it, and how the notes connect.

The basic idea

Choosing fingers that move comfortably to the next note keeps your playing steady. There is no single correct answer; it changes with the phrase, the tempo, the size of your hand, and the expression you want.

Using it in performance and programming

Play slowly and look for a shape that does not put too much tension in your wrist or fingers. Even when programming in a DAW, imagining a fingering you could actually play tends to produce more natural phrases.

Difference from related terms

Fingering is the plan for which fingers to use, while picking is the action of striking the string. With both in place, guitar and bass playing becomes steady.

The faster the phrase, the more efficient it is to fix the order of your fingers first and then repeat it.
