Vocal Ad-lib

Japanese name
フェイク

A vocal ad-lib is a vocal expression where you slightly alter or ornament the main melody as you sing.

How to use it

Adding a short one on a repeated chorus or at the end of a line adds personality. Start with short phrases, as you would with an ad-lib.

Difference from related terms

A vocal ad-lib mainly ornaments the sung melody, while ad-lib in the broader sense refers to improvised playing.

Leaving enough of the original melody recognizable keeps it natural.
