Logic Pro X offers a variety of ways to stay organized, including editing track names in batches, using colors to make tracks easier to identify, and grouping tracks together.
This guide covers the most useful methods I regularly use to organize tracks in the main window.
Different Ways to Name Tracks and Regions
You can rename a track by double-clicking its name, and you can rename a region by switching to the Text tool.
What I want to cover here is how to rename multiple regions to match their track name, as well as the reverse: renaming a track to match a region.
As you arrange a song, it is common to copy regions and end up with region names that no longer match the track name.
When that happens, open the Functions menu and choose “Name Regions/Cells by Track Name.” The region names will change to match the track name.
To apply a region name to its track instead, choose “Name Track by Region/Cell Name.”
How to Color Tracks
Just as with track names, you can change colors for multiple items at once.
You can make region colors match their tracks, or do the reverse and make track colors match their regions.
How to Group Tracks with a Track Stack
You can also group tracks functionally, not just make them look more organized.
Select the tracks you want to group, secondary-click (right-click) one of their track headers, and choose “Create Track Stack.”
You can then choose between a Folder Stack and a Summing Stack. I recommend the more versatile Summing Stack.
The tracks will be grouped as shown here, with a subtle background color. The top track is the Summing Stack. Click its downward-pointing disclosure triangle to collapse and hide the individual tracks inside it.
Adjusting the stack’s volume or pan controls every track in the Track Stack at once. A Summing Stack also lets you insert plug-ins on the stack itself.
This works much like grouping tracks with a bus, but it also makes the main window easier to read. For that reason, a Summing Stack may be a better choice than a bus in some projects.
