My Mac was running low on local storage, so I searched for the largest files to delete and found a large number of IK Multimedia installer files.
It appears that DMG files had remained after updates through IK Product Manager, so I’ll explain how I dealt with them.
For reference, this happened with macOS 10.15.7 and IK Product Manager 1.0.4. A later update may have resolved the issue.
Check Your Mac’s Available Storage and Largest Files
First, check how much storage is available on your Mac and which large files are present.
Click the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of the screen, then select About This Mac.
Select Storage from the tabs at the top of the window.
Click Manage.
You can now see a detailed breakdown of the files using your Mac’s local storage.
Delete DMG Files Taking Up Space on Your Mac
In this case, the problem is leftover IK Product Manager update files, so click Documents.
For example, I found this installer for T-RackS, an IK Multimedia plug-in. I had already deleted several files before taking this screenshot, but about ten files of a similar size had been left behind.
Click Show in Finder at the bottom of the window shown above to locate the containing folder. From there, simply delete the file.
Clean Up Local Storage Occasionally
Large files are often left behind for one reason or another, as they were here, so it is a good idea to review your local storage occasionally.
Even if you configure sound libraries to live on an external SSD, the software itself generally needs to be installed in local storage. Keeping a reasonable amount of free space will make music production more comfortable.
