This article introduces MAGIX coreFX VolumeFormer, a pumping effect plug-in.
It creates ducking, an essential technique in EDM production, without requiring sidechain routing.
coreFX VolumeFormer
A pumping effect plug-in temporarily reduces the volume of a sound.
Apply the reduction at the beginning of each beat to create ducking. Apply it later in the sound to create gating, tremolo, or stutter-like effects.
This is coreFX VolumeFormer. Set the control on the left to 1/4 and adjust the parameters on the right as shown to create ducking.
Move each point to control how much attack remains, when the volume drops, when it returns, and the shape of its rise.
Five points provide enough control for most ducking curves. I find this relatively simple design easy to use.
There are plenty of presets too. If you are unsure where to begin, choose a preset and customize it from there.

Comparison with Compressor-Based Sidechain Ducking
I previously made a video about sidechain ducking that uses a kick to trigger a compressor.
The second half of that video briefly discusses the differences between compressor-based ducking and a dedicated pumping effect. Here is a closer comparison.
When a compressor creates the ducking, you need a kick or another signal to act as the trigger. That is expected, but it can become inconvenient.
- You want ducking even where no kick is playing
- You want the sound to rise along a different curve from the kick’s decay
- You do not want to configure sidechain routing
For these and similar reasons, it is often easier to insert a dedicated ducking plug-in directly on the track.
coreFX VolumeFormer is a powerful tool in situations like these.

I often saw LFO Tool recommended and considered buying it, but it was one of the more expensive options, so I held off. Its broad feature set is a selling point, but if you only need ducking, the more focused coreFX VolumeFormer is sufficient and easy to use.
I also own Kickstart and use it alongside VolumeFormer. Depending on the BPM, none of its curves may feel quite right, so it is less suitable if you want detailed parameter control. On the other hand, when a Kickstart preset fits perfectly, it is exceptionally quick and convenient.
At the time this article was written, coreFX VolumeFormer cost about ¥3,000, making it one of the less expensive options. I happened to get it during a free promotion.
